Hallwyl Castle

Seengen, AG

Hallwyl Castle is one of the most beautiful moated castles in Switzerland. The museum shows the eventful life of the noble von Hallwyl family. The nature reserve of Lake Hallwil lies just outside the castle walls. Hallwyl Castle is also a popular venue for weddings and social events.

Culture and nature experience

The romantic Hallwyl Castle offers a wealth of history and nature. In the museum, visitors can dive into in the impressive history of the von Hallwyls, a family of minor nobility. This family distinguished itself in many ways over its 800-year history: on Swiss battlefields, at European courts, in science, politics and trade as well as in the world of finance.

A castle and its family

The audio-guided tour allows you to listen to family members talking about their lives. The words of ordinary folk such as the farmers and subjects of the Hallwyl estate can also be heard. The eerie cries of the prisoners can still be heard in the cell tower. Museum Aargau offers an audio tour of the castle especially for children.

After visiting the museum, relax in the idyllic castle courtyard with its bistro. Hallwyl Castle is also just a stone's throw from the unique nature reserve on Lake Hallwil. The moated castle is itself idyllically situated on three islands, gently surrounded by the Aabach river.

Guided tours, workshops and events

Museum Aargau offers guided tours and workshops at Hallwyl Castle. Groups can book themed castle tours and medicinal herb workshops. School classes can try their hand at threshing grain in the mill and relive turbulent defensive battles around the castle as from way back in 1415.

Adventurous visitors can book the Castle Foxtrail, an exciting scavenger hunt around Lake Hallwil and through the castle.
