Wildegg Castle
Wildegg, AG
Wildegg Castle is the only talking castle in Switzerland. Residents of the castle talk about their lives in an entertaining way. The Baroque Wildegg Castle domain with its habitat museum and historic gardens is a cultural landscape of national importance.
Baroque castle and garden experience
Wildegg Castle sits majestically on a hill, surrounded by its impressive gardens. From here, the view sweeps far across Aargau: over gardens, meadows and vineyards. Constructed by the Habsburgs in the 13th century, the von Effinger family lived in the castle for several generations.
Talking portraits
The habitat museum with its 37 living and working rooms bears witness to the aristocratic lifestyle and exquisite taste of the von Effinger family. On the tour, visitors encounter former residents of the castle in talking portraits. These give an entertaining insight into the history of the castle from the Middle Ages right up to the 20th century.
Kitchen garden and pleasure garden
The kitchen garden and pleasure garden are located on a terrace below the palace. The Baroque garden is perfect for a stroll, marvelling at the various perfumes in the air. Many historical varieties of different roses bloom in the rose garden.
Guided tours, workshops and events
Museum Aargau offers guided tours and workshops at Wildegg Castle, as well as themed activities for groups in the castle and gardens. School groups can learn all about the aristocracy and garden culture – a real experience. Children can dress up as knights or saddle horses in the barn.
Visitors seeking adventure can book the Foxtrail, an exciting scavenger hunt through the castle. Wildegg Castle is also known for its traditional events such as the seedling market or the tulip bulb and gourmet market. The castle is also an ideal backdrop for lavish celebrations such as weddings.
