About us
As the national association of castles in Switzerland, we represent their interests in the fields of politics and cultural tourism, both in Switzerland and abroad. We are committed to the preservation of this unique Swiss heritage.
Our monuments are surrounded by unique landscapes: they sit majestically on hills, in idyllic settings – on a lakeshore or as a symbol in the middle of a town. Visiting a castle is always part of an overall experience, as a hiking destination, the final stop on a boat trip or the highlight of a city tour.
The Association THE SWISS CASTLES was founded in September 2014 and represents 30 castles and palaces located in 13 cantons and three different language regions. It will only accept as members the best castles in Switzerland, which meet the association's quality standards in terms of infrastructure, offers and sustainability.
The castles offer a wide range of events, guided tours and theatrical stagings, always tailored to the target visitor group and always set in authentic surroundings. A unique adventure awaits anyone who enjoys the fantastic world of castles and palaces in Switzerland, as excursion destinations, for relaxation or out of a thirst for knowledge.
The committee is made up of the following members:
- Marco Castellaneta, president of the association, cultural officer of the Canton of Lucerne, Heidegg Castle, Wyher Castle
- Walter Bersorger, Director, Zug Castle Museum
- Barbara Egli, Director, Spiez Castle Museum
- Thomas Gnägi, Director, Werdenberg Castle and Museums
- Tatiana Oberson, Marketing and Communications Manager, Château de Prangins

Switzerland has never had a king, but there are Swiss castles and fortresses set against unique natural backdrops. These stone monuments bear witness to a fascinating past and still invite visitors to experience Swiss history up close. The Swiss Castles Association is a cooperative platform and ensures that tourists also find their way to castles and fortresses in Switzerland. This wonderful work is indispensable for marketing this cultural heritage to tourists.
Martin Nydegger, Director of Switzerland Tourism
They're unique. They are attractive. They are rich ... in history and stories, and it is our conviction that these should be shared with many people in Switzerland and beyond. The Swiss Castles Association therefore not only brings together strengths and skills, but also transmits knowledge and impulses to all regions of Switzerland. It is important for the Canton of Berne that its seven castles are part of this network. Collaboration not only reinforces on-site historical mediation, but also raises the profile of our historical treasures beyond the canton.
Sybille Birrer, Head of the Office of Culture, Department of Education and Culture, Canton of Berne
As the director of Château de Prangins at the time, my dream was for there to be a common voice advocating for the interests of Swiss castles. When the canton of Aargau took the initiative to found an umbrella organization, I supported the idea from the very start. This vision was achieved very quickly and Swiss castles - and also the castles in Vaud - are perceived as cultural assets of national importance and have rightly claimed a permanent place on the tourist map. In this, I am delighted.
Nicole Minder, former Head of the Culture Department of the Canton of Vaud
Castles are precious cultural assets that enable us to experience history and identity. Preserving and maintaining them requires coordinated support from the federal government, cantons, municipalities and from private individuals. The “Swiss Castles” association plays an important role in this regard, by raising awareness of these important and attractive cultural sites, and by bringing together all of the stakeholders. Our shared heritage deserves long-term care and attention.
Dr. Georg Matter, Co-Chairman of the Conference of Cantonal Delegates for Cultural Affairs (CDAC)
Castles are living cultural sites that allow you to experience history. Heidegg Castle is a stunning example of this, and as a member of the “Swiss Castles” association, it also enriches our cultural heritage. The Canton of Lucerne is fully behind these efforts. Our castles are not only historic buildings, but also inspirational meeting places.
